Filmmaker to Drive Across British Columbia Marking over
100 Years of the BC Professional Fire Fighters' Association
VANCOUVER, BC - This summer, documentary filmmaker Jane Spitz of Spitz Films Production is driving across British Columbia, from the Kootenays through Northern BC and down the coast to Vancouver Island, filming fire departments along the way for a new film project marking over 100 years of the BC Professional Fire Fighters' Association (BCPFFA).
The film traces the history of BC's fire service: the members who came before, the progress they fought for, and the solidarity that continues today. It celebrates the advocacy that has protected members over the decades, and highlights the diversity of departments across communities, generations, and roles. The project also examines the modern-day realities facing fire fighters, including lithium-ion battery fires, synthetic construction materials, rising cancer rates, cumulative career stress, and growing populations across the province, and how the fire service continues to adapt.
Spitz worked full-time as Communications Manager for both the BCPFFA and the Burn Fund before leaving the role in April 2026 to pursue documentary filmmaking full-time. She remains grateful to continue working alongside both organizations, capturing the stories that she hopes will have a lasting impact in BC’s fire service.
Spitz is covering roughly 4,500 kilometres by car and ferry, rather than by air, to capture the unique story of each community along the way.
““Every department I visit has its own story, but the thread that connects them is the same, professionals who train for a high standard, advocate for each other, and keep showing up for the community in countless ways. I wanted to document that dedication to service.””
