Understanding your Pension

The British Columbia Professional Fire Fighters' Association (BCPFFA) is committed to ensuring its members have a secure retirement. Professional firefighters in BC are enrolled in the Municipal Pension Plan (MPP).

Within the MPP, BCPFFA members are primarily in Group 5. These groups are specifically for police officers and firefighters, and include Prevention, Maintenance and Communication Divisions, providing a higher benefit accrual rate and an earlier retirement age than the general member Group 1.

  • Group 5: This group is for police officers and firefighters and provides an enhanced retirement benefit. Members and employers in Group 5 contribute more than those in other groups. In return, members receive a higher benefit accrual rate, meaning their pension accumulates faster. This is a significant advantage, particularly for a profession with an earlier retirement age (age 60). As of January 1, 2025, participation in Group 5 is mandatory for new police officers and firefighters in a municipality unless the employer was already a "pre-2025 Group 2 employer.”

The BCPFFA plays a direct role in the MPP's governance, sharing the role with Police, ensuring its members' interests are represented. For detailed information, members can consult the BC Pension Corporation website.
