Overview and History
The VFRS Band is a civic musical ensemble that has been rooted in tradition and pride since 1927. Acting as "musical ambassadors" for the fire service, the ensemble is composed of a mix of active and retired firefighters alongside dedicated civilian volunteers from the community.
Mission, Vision and Values
Mission: To represent Vancouver Fire Rescue Services with professionalism through live music at civic, ceremonial, and charitable events.
Vision: To serve as a recognized symbol of VFRS pride and a pillar of unity for both the fire service family and the wider community.
Core Values: The band operates under the values of Service, Respect, Excellence, Community, and Unity.
Key Responsibilities
The band provides high-calibre musical performances for a variety of functions:
Ceremonial & Civic: Remembrance Day ceremonies, memorials, parades, and civic receptions.
Departmental: VFRS and City-sponsored functions.
Community: Charitable events, community celebrations, and musical outreach/mentorship.
Regional Outreach: The band participates in firefighter memorials and community initiatives across British Columbia and beyond.
Structure and Funding
Governance: The ensemble is governed by a volunteer executive committee and led by a musical director. Financial Support: The band is funded by the City of Vancouver. This financial assistance covers musical direction, uniforms, equipment, sheet music, and travel expenses.
