Biography

Todd Schierling joined Surrey Fire Service in 1996 and is Suppression Fire Captain. He served on IAFF Local 1271’s executive board and the Surrey Fire Fighters Charitable Society (2006–2016). Elected to the BCPFFA executive in 2016, he joined its Burn Board and became BCPFFA President in 2023 and 2025. Since 2018 he’s been a Field Service Representative for the IAFF.

He helped start the Surrey FF Goodwill Senior Girls High School Basketball Tournament in 2001, has delivered over $150,000 in bursaries, and served as Treasurer of Athletic and Social activities. His union roles progressed from Local 1271 Surrey trustee/treasurer to BCPFFA Secretary-Treasurer (2016) and President (2023).

In 2023 he was appointed Trustee on the BC Municipal Pension Plan (Police/Fire), joined the BC Federation of Labour Executive Council, and the BC First Responders Mental Health Committee. In 2025 he joined the National Advisory Group for Bill C-224’s cancer-research framework and a McMaster University working group on early cancer detection for fire fighters.

His dedication has been recognized with several awards throughout his career:

  • The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2013,

  • The Surrey Leader: Community Leadership Award in 2019,

  • The Local 1271 Axe Award in 2020,

  • The King Charles III Coronation Medal in 2025.
