Todd Schierling has demonstrated leadership, service, and commitment to the fire service, the labour movement, and the community throughout his career. Since joining Surrey Fire Service in 1996, where he serves as a Suppression Fire Captain, Todd has built a record of sustained contribution at the local, provincial, and national levels.

A union officer since 2008, Todd has served in a range of important leadership capacities. His work has included service with IAFF Local 1271, the Surrey Fire Fighters Charitable Society, and the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Association (BCPFFA). Elected to the BCPFFA Executive in 2016, he currently serves on the Burn Fund Board, as Secretary-Treasurer, and as President. Since 2018, he has also served as a Field Service Representative for the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), further extending his impact in support of fire fighters and their locals.

Todd has also made significant contributions through his technical expertise. He is widely recognized for his strong IT and database skill set, including helping establish and support systems access for BC locals. This work has strengthened administrative capacity, improved coordination, and supported more effective service delivery across the province.

His commitment to community service is equally notable. In 2001, Todd helped launch the Surrey FF Goodwill Senior Girls High School Basketball Tournament, an initiative that has delivered more than $125,000 in bursaries to student-athletes. He also served as Treasurer for sports and social events, demonstrating his commitment to fellowship, charitable causes, and community service.

Todd’s broader leadership extends well beyond his union roles. In 2023, he was appointed as a Trustee on the BC Municipal Pension Plan (Police/Fire), joined the BC Federation of Labour Executive Council, and became a member of the BC First Responders Mental Health Committee. In 2025, he was appointed by the IAFF to the National Advisory Group supporting Bill C-224’s cancer research framework, and was selected by McMaster University to a working group focused on the early detection of cancer in fire fighters.
